Roles and permissions for members of a shared folder
Members of a shared folder can have three possible roles: viewer, editor, or owner. This article explains what a member with each of these roles can do in a shared folder.
Owner
The owner is the team member who creates a shared folder (unless it was created inside of a team folder). Owners can:
- View folder contents
- View the members of the shared folder and their roles
- Leave the folder
- Email members
- Edit folder contents
- Invite and remove members
- Change roles of other members
- Cancel invites and reinvite members
- Unshare the folder
- Make another member the owner
- Determine who can be invited to the folder
- Determine who can manage membership of the folder
- Move shared folders into team folders
Editor
By default, members added to a shared folder are editors. Editors can:
- View folder contents
- View the members of the shared folder and their roles
- Leave the folder
- Email members
- Edit folder contents
- Invite and remove members (except the owner)
- Change the roles of other members
- Cancel invites and reinvite members
Note that there are some situations where the editor role is more limited:
- An owner can choose not to allow editors to invite and remove members or change the roles of other members.
- In folders owned by a Business user, only editors on the same Business team can invite, remove, and change the roles of other members.
Viewer
Viewers have the most limited role. They can only:
- View folder contents
- View the members of the shared folder and their roles
- Leave the folder
- Email members
Viewers will be able to tell that they have view-only permissions from the lock icon on the shared folder:
