Shared folder differences with Dropbox Business

With Dropbox Business:

  • A shared folder only counts once toward the overall storage quota for the team: you can share folders with teammates without using space on multiple accounts.
  • Shared folders can be shared with someone outside your team (if your admin allows it).

  • If your admin allows sharing with non-team members, then you can still set certain shared folders as team-only.

Team folders are different from shared folders. They are created and owned by the team admin.

Error messages and other issues with team folders

I'm an admin, and I'm trying to rename the team folder

On a Dropbox Business or Enterprise team, team admins who have enabled early access to improved team folders can rename team folders using the team folder manager:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com using your admin credentials.
  2. Click Admin Console.
  3. Click Team folders.
  • Note: When a team admin renames a team folder, the name is changed for all members.
  • Note: On a free team, the team folder is named after your team, and anyone on your team can change this.

Team admins who have not enabled early access to improved team folders can create a new team folder, rather than renaming an existing one. Team admins can then transfer the contents from the old team folder to the new one:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com using your admin credentials.
  2. Click Admin Console.
  3. Click Team folder.
  4. Click New team folder at the top of the screen.
  5. Drag the files from the existing team folder to the new one.

I want to rename a team folder, but I'm not the admin of my team

Only the team admin of a Dropbox Business or Enterprise team can create, rename, or delete a team folder.

Note: Team admins who have enabled early access to improved team folders can rename team folders. Team admins who have not enabled early access to this can instead create a new team folder and then migrate content.

I'm trying to move the team folder

Team folders cannot be moved to a new location in your Dropbox, nor can they be "nested" within another folder. If you'd like to change the location of a team folder, consider creating a new one.

I'd like to unshare or delete a team folder

Only team admins can unshare or delete a team folder. If you're trying to delete a team folder to save space on your computer, consider using the selective sync feature instead.

Dropbox Business team admins, or the creators of free teams, can unshare and delete a team folder:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com using your admin credentials.
  2. Click Admin Console.
  3. Click Team folder.
  4. Click the X beside the team folder name.

The unshared team folder becomes a regular folder in your Dropbox account. You can delete this folder as needed.

I'm trying to move a shared folder out of the team folder

Only an admin can move a shared folder out of the team folder. If you're the team admin of a Dropbox Business team, or the creator of a free team, you can manage folders:

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com using your admin credentials.
  2. Click Admin Console.
  3. Click Team folder.
  4. Click the team folder name.

    • To move a shared folder:

      1. Right-click the shared folder.
      2. Click Move.

    • To delete a shared folder:

      1. Hover your mouse pointer over the folder name.
      2. Click the Share button that appears.
      3. Click Invite people to collaborate.
      4. Click the X beside the team member name.

Only the owner of a shared folder can move it out of the team folder. If you're not the owner of a shared folder, contact the owner to remove it from the team folder. You can also contact your team admin.

I'm trying to move a shared folder into another shared folder

You cannot move a shared folder into another shared folders. This is referred to as "nesting," and will break shared folder functionality.

However, team members on a Dropbox Business, Enterprise, or free team can move a shared folder into a team folder.

Only the owner of a shared folder can move it into a team folder. If you're not the owner of a shared folder, you cannot move it to a team folder. However, you can contact the shared folder owner and request that they do this for you.
